Boooo, My Little Pretties!!!!! Happy Halloween!

This eve when spirits appear and visit us 'normal' folks, with their empty bags begging for tasty treats, one can approach this hallowed night with merriment and anticipation as millions of  children dress up in some of the most ghoulish outfits their parents can afford. Honestly, what a kid can do with a simple white bed sheet and some red food coloring can scare the living crap out of you.
Ahh, but we printmakers are a hearty bunch, and  have done our fair share of dressing up and hosting a party or two with our inky friends. Our artistic activities can be quite inventive, too and I want to commend the activities of Carlos Barberena, (whose lovely Ghoulish Geisha girl is pictured below)
of La Calaca Press who has twice now ambitiously organized an international group of artists to commemorate this special day through All Saints day in November.

The Calaca Press International Print Exchange has realized hundreds of artists from around the globe to participate in its the Day of the Dead theme. I am going to provide you a sampling of this years' artists, and I encourage you to view their site for more images at http://calacapressinternationalprintexchange.blogspot.com.

Versions of the project are currently touring in the US, Mexico and Central America.

This is an annual print project begun by my friend Guadalupe Victorica, who resides in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The invited country for this year is Japan. Prints donated to the PFP collection help benefit the Workshop of Casa Hogar el Refugio, a youth shelter in Monterrey, NL México.
This is a growing exhibition, and last year the show traveled to Greece. It saw over 250 artists from 49 countries participate. Calling all printmaker and artists that do prints.....participate in this important project.

Last year this exhibition traveled to Greece, so give it a go, and say your peace. many thanks to Guadalupe Victorica who organizes this project - 4th year running.

John Sevigny's "TRI" exhibition makes its Midwest debut October 7 at the Chicago Photography Center

http://gonecity.blogspot.comA selection of photographs from John Sevigny's decade long 'visit' to Mexico, will make is Midwest premiere at the Chicago Photography Center this coming Friday, October 7th. Sevigny has chosen works that reflect his often nomadic pathway through the big cities and small towns, often choosing images that show another side of Mexican life, a side that is sometimes sad, tragic, poignant and yet, delivers a sucker punch to the gut. His unscathing approach, revealing the underbelly of the lives of everyday Mexicans, not the glamorous resort 'fun in the sun' beaches or tourist areas, shows a more meaningful and thoughtful side of our southern neighbor which is going through some pretty chaotic and horrific times. Sevigny will be present at the reception , and will give a brief discussion on the work. Reception starts at 7pm.
